Guru Ram Das Ashram, located in Los Angeles, California, was founded in 1969 and is a large and active community based on Sikh principles. People of all faiths and backgrounds come to Guru Ram Das Ashram for many different reasons: to study and practice the teachings of Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan, to visit Guru Ram Das Gurdwara, to experience life in a spiritual community and to create a private retreat and get rest and relaxation in a country location. The ashram offers living with modern amenities in private apartments. Community activities include daily group sadhana, kirtan (spiritual music), and Kundalini and Hatha yoga, Tai Chi, and dance classes at the yoga center.
Yogi Bhajan, a Master of Kundalini Yoga by the age of 16 – itself a rare feat – gave his first lecture at a Los Angeles high school gym on January 5, 1969. Then a 39-year-old recent émigré from India, he left behind a government career to realize the vision of bringing Kundalini Yoga to the West. No matter that not a single student was present that evening; he came to teach and he spoke to the empty hall.
Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan® is considered the most comprehensive of yoga traditions, combining meditation, mantra, physical exercises and breathing techniques. It is a Raj Yog, encompassing the eight limbs of yoga into a singular practice. “Kundalini” literally means “the curl of the lock of hair of the beloved.” This poetic metaphor alludes to the flow of energy and consciousness that exists within each of us, and enables us to merge with – or “yoke” – the universal Self. Fusing individual and universal consciousness creates a divine union, called yoga.
