The Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Center is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization run by voluntary staff and dedicated to the aim of disseminating the knowledge of yoga. Center have been in continuous operation at its present location on West 24th Street in New York since 1964 – and have been teaching in NY since 1959. In addition, center is a part of a world wide organization, the International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres, founded by Swami Vishnu-devananda. A renowned authority on Hatha Yoga and Raja Yoga, Swami Vishnu-devananda was sent to the west by his Master, Swami Sivananda to spread the ideals of Yoga and Vedanta with the words ‘people are waiting.’
Swami Sivananda is the inspiration behind the teachings of the International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centers, founded by Swami Vishnu-devananda, one of Master Sivananda ‘s main disciples, sent by him to the West in 1957 to teach Classical Yoga and Vedanta. Swami Sivananda is considered the SatGuru of the organization, the Master of Yoga, who in contemporary times revived the classical teachings and made the Synthesis of Yoga accessible to the West through his disciples.
By closely observing the lifestyles and needs of people in our modern world, Swami Vishnudevananda synthesized the ancient wisdom of Yoga into 5 basic principles, which can easily be incorporated into your own pattern of living, to provide a long, healthy and happy life. Proper Exercise – Asana, Proper Breathing – Pranayama, Proper Relaxation – Savasana, Proper Diet – Vegetarian, Positive Thinking and Meditation – Vedanta and Dhyana.
